Personal Statement

As an accomplished economist and academic leader, I have dedicated over three decades to advancing knowledge in development economics, public finance, trade policy, and small business growth. Serving as a Full Professor of Economics at the University of Lagos, I have been privileged to contribute significantly to teaching, research, and policy development that enhances economic sustainability and inclusiveness. Throughout my career, I have actively fostered collaboration between academia, the private sector, and government institutions, strengthening frameworks for effective policy implementation and economic growth. My tenure as Director of the Institute of Nigeria-China Development Studies (INCDS-UNILAG) from 2019 to 2023 and my current role as Director of Quality Assurance and Servicom at the University of Lagos reflect my commitment to educational excellence and institutional development. My research has been instrumental in shaping policy discussions in Africa, particularly in addressing the twin challenges of unemployment and poverty while increasing global value chain penetration. Leading multiple national research grants, I have worked tirelessly to enhance small businesses’ capacity, equipping them to thrive in competitive markets. Additionally, as the Project Coordinator of the EU-Africa Connectivity Project (EU-Africa Connect), I actively promote youth participation and empowerment within African development frameworks. Beyond national engagements, I am deeply involved in international research networks such as the China-Africa Research Network (CAReNet), Development and Allied Policy Studies (DEVAPS), and Africa Trade, Investment, and Policy (Africa-Trip) Studies. My commitment to evidence-based research is reflected in my contributions to the National Development Plan, Oyo State Development Plan, and Lagos State Development Plan. At the core of my academic and policy pursuits is the belief that home-growth policies and locally relevant economic strategies are pivotal to Africa’s development. This philosophy was the focal point of my professorial inaugural lecture, Rethinking Nigeria’s Development Process—A Choice Between Lamborghini and Ajagbe-Ejo, in which I underscored the necessity of context-driven economic solutions. As I continue to advance economic research, education, and policy advocacy, my goal remains clear: to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s development narrative by bridging the gap between theoretical insights and practical solutions that benefit economies, businesses, and individuals alike.
