Personal Statement
Dr. Akinlabi O. Akintuyi is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, specializing in Cartography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Remote Sensing. His research focuses on modelling interactions between natural resources, climate change, and geospatial technologies, with his PhD work emphasizing land use/land cover (LULC) dynamics, climate systems, and their impacts on carbon sequestration. He has authored over twenty high-impact publications and contributed to projects such as the TETFUND-funded study on deforestation and carbon stock loss in Southwest Nigeria. Dr. Akintuyi employs advanced methodologies, including machine learning for analyzing gully erosion drivers and an ensemble of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) models to prioritize erosion risk in watersheds in the Anambra Basin. In 2020, he was awarded a grant by the Embassy of France in Nigeria for the Research and Innovation in Adapting to Climate Change (AIRACC) project. Dr. Akintuyi is currently engaged in the international project “Climate Adaptation and Resilience - Pan-African and Transdisciplinary Lens on the Margins: Tackling the Risks of Extreme Events” (CLARE-PALMTREES), funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This transdisciplinary initiative, conducted in collaboration with the University of Cape Town, Lead City University, the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), and five other institutions, aims to enhance climate resilience in vulnerable African communities. Through his interdisciplinary work, Dr. Akintuyi continues to advance the application of geospatial science in addressing pressing environmental challenges linked to climate change and sustainable resource management.
