Personal Statement

I am a mid-career development economist. My research areas are in employment and labour markets, social and economic inequality, and development policy-making with focus on sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). I am passionate about the distributed influences of structural changes and demographic transition on employment outcomes in SSA as well as new innovations for stimulating the labour market in the region. I am now extending my research into historical perspectives of labour market outcomes in Nigeria and SSA, with focus on cultural and colonial foundations of the institutional framework of labour markets. I believe this can engender sustainable discussions on the issues that constitute binding constraints on the structure and capacity of labour markets in SSA to properly tweak employment outcomes in favour of vulnerable segments. I am also working on gendered and cultural nuances in employment gap among SSA countries, and the implications of recent digital transformation for labour market outcomes in the region.
