I warmly welcome all freshmen and returning students to the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Lagos, to what promises to be an exciting and fulfilling 2018/2019 academic session. The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the oldest Faculties in the University of Lagos, having been established in 1962 as the Faculty of Business and Social Studies. The Faculty has remained very visible in terms of academic activities. The Faculty remains the foremost Faculty of Social Sciences in Nigeria. The Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos comprises seven (7) Departments namely: Economics, Geography, Mass Communication, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Social Work. It is with great pride that I bring to you the good news that all the programmes in the Faculty are accredited by the National Universities Commission.
The Faculty is one of the largest Faculties in the University of Lagos, with a population of over 5000 students comprising of pre-degree, undergraduate and post-graduate students. Currently, both the students population and Faculty members show diversity which truly reflects the plurality of the Nigerian nation.
The Faculty has over 150 dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff who have created the right ambience for teaching and learning. The Faculty continues to strive to improve the teaching and learning environment in order to ease the pressure on students. Students are encouraged to avail themselves of all existing opportunities in the Faculty to enhance learning. All Faculty staff are in loco parentis to students and thus help to minimise situations of crisis. However, fundamentally students should see their Course Adviser as the first line of parents and thus should maximise this noble gesture by consulting them on all academic and personal issues.
The Faculty prospectus has been put together to guide students through the duration of their academic programme in the University. It contains very useful information on academic requirements, available courses, academic and administrative/technical staff. Students are therefore enjoined to consult the prospectus regularly for guidance.
Once again, on behalf of the staff of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos, I wish all our students an exciting and memorable sojourn in the Faculty.
